You wouldn’t buy a home without a real estate agent, so why spend $100,000 or more on a camper van without first talking to an expert?

An RV buying concierge helps you identify your needs, narrow your options, and navigate a purchase. For camper van shoppers, Project Vanlife pairs that personal guidance with the free Vanalyzer tool to help turn an overwhelming search into a more manageable shortlist.

We recently welcomed Sami of Project Vanlife to the Van·Nois·Seur Podcast to explore that approach. His work starts with understanding the person buying the van: their travel plans, priorities, and budget. From there, the conversation moves toward suitable vans and help with the buying process.

That stood out to us because we see how easily shopping can become a second job. You watch walkthroughs, visit shows, compare floorplans, and discover another model just when you thought you had it figured out.

You don’t need to become an expert in every camper van before asking for help.

What can an RV buying concierge help you do?

A camper van buying service can guide you through the decisions between wanting a van and choosing one. A useful advisor helps you organize your priorities, identify options worth considering, and understand the tradeoffs before you commit.

That might mean finding a floorplan you haven’t seen, recognizing that a simpler van meets your needs, or working out whether a particular upgrade is worth the cost to you.

The value is in the explanation behind a recommendation. Why does this van fit your life? What would you be giving up? What else should you compare? Those answers are more useful than a list of popular models.

Project Vanlife’s approach includes advice and purchasing assistance. Sami explained that he holds a dealership license and works with manufacturers and other dealers. Ask which services and vehicles are available for your situation; this article focuses on camper vans and Class B RVs.

Find the overlap between your needs, quality, and budget

A van can look wonderful in a video and still be the wrong choice for you. Start with three things:

  • Your needs: the layout and features that support how you will actually travel.
  • Build quality: the construction, components, and support behind the van.
  • Your budget: a purchase and ownership cost you can comfortably manage.

Picture an ordinary day on the road. Where will you sleep, cook, work, and put your gear? Will you mostly use campgrounds or spend time away from hookups? Are you planning occasional weekends or extended trips?

Separate the essentials from the features you simply like. You may decide an upgrade deserves more of your budget, or discover you can spend less because you don’t need it. The goal is a van that supports your plans without stretching your finances beyond your comfort level.

Settle the chassis, bed, and bathroom first

These three choices help narrow the field before you get buried in finishes and equipment lists.

Chassis and size: Consider how the van fits your driving, parking, and travel plans. A Ford Transit, Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, or Ram ProMaster is part of the decision, along with the length and configuration of the finished RV.

Bed: Lie down in it. Check the sleeping length, access, and whether you’re comfortable with any nightly setup. If one person gets up, what happens to the other? A great-looking bed still has to work for the people sleeping in it.

Bathroom: Decide what you need and how much interior space you’re willing to devote to it. Step inside, close the door if there is one, and test whether you can move comfortably.

Then walk through the rest of your routine. Can two people move around each other? Where do shoes and wet jackets go? Does the table work for meals or a laptop? Interior style matters, too, but make sure you like living in the layout as much as looking at it.

Before committing to a custom build, explore whether an existing model already gets close to your priorities. For more on that decision, read our three camper van buying mistakes to avoid.

Use the free Vanalyzer to build a shortlist

Save time researching with the FREE Vanalyzer. Explore camper vans matched to your lifestyle and narrow down your choices.

The quiz gives you a starting point based on how you plan to use a van. It can help focus your research when the number of brands, layouts, and features starts to feel overwhelming.

Try the free Vanalyzer

Use your matches to decide which vans deserve a closer look. Compare them with your essentials, watch relevant walkthroughs, and arrange to see promising options in person when possible. Take any surprises or unanswered questions to a planning call.

You can also share feedback with Project Vanlife about how well the tool reflects your needs. Your results are a starting point for a conversation, and your priorities may become clearer as you explore.

Compare the full purchase and ownership picture

Two listings can look similar while including very different equipment. Compare the actual model year, configuration, upgrades, condition, and fees. A pop-top or other major option can explain a price difference that isn’t obvious in a quick glance at the photos.

Ask for the full written price and a clear list of what is included. Distinguish MSRP from an already-discounted advertised price, and avoid assuming that one discount percentage applies to every van.

Leave room in your budget for insurance, registration, maintenance, storage if needed, and the travel you bought the van to enjoy. If you’re considering a used van, arrange an appropriate inspection before committing. Our new versus used camper van guide can help you weigh those choices.

Service deserves a conversation before the sale, too. Ask who handles chassis work and who handles the living-area systems. Find out what warranty coverage applies and where you can get help along your usual travel routes. Speak with longtime owners about how their vans have held up and what support was like when something went wrong.

Is the advice free, and how is the advisor paid?

The Vanalyzer is free, and Project Vanlife offers a free Vanlife Planning Call. Additional transaction assistance may involve fees. In our interview, Sami described paid help with private-party purchases, including steps such as title and loan-payoff coordination. Confirm the services, fees, and terms that apply before moving forward.

Project Vanlife describes its advice as unbiased and says builder partners fund the business. As with any buying service, ask how compensation works, which options are considered, and whether alternatives outside its partner network will be discussed.

You should come away understanding both the recommendation and the business relationship behind it.
